Our name originates from the two most important parts of a Hammond Jazz and Funk organ.
The Drawbar and The Tonewheel, hence “The Drawtones”.
The Drawtones pay tribute to the great bands in jazz, funk and soul.
Our line up of top class musicians has taken us to some top venues including Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Pizza Express Dean Street Soho, The Pheasantry, Chelsea, The Hideaway, Toulouse Lautrec and Fleece Jazz Club to name just a few…
HAMMOND | Jazz | FUNK | SOUL
THE Hammond Organ GROOVE
The magic ingredient on iconic sounds from the 50s right up to current star Cory Henry of Snarky Puppy, the Hammond Organ groove cuts like a canyon through Soul, Jazz and Funk in the work of genre-defining artists such as Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff, George Benson, Booker-T, Junior Walker, Grover Washington, The Crusaders, George Duke, Steely Dan and many more….
Rod Pooley’s ‘The Drawtones: Drawbar Groove’ creatively explores this lineage without being a mere carbon copy. All of them artists in their own right, the members of the outfit bring their own energy, fun and funk to the table! Alongside organ maestro Rod, the saxophone and frontline will be featured with top names such as Simon Bates, Alex Clarke, Vasili’s Xenepoulos, Derek Nash, Dennis Rollins and more… Andy Williams was resident guitarist at the original Pizza Express Dean Street jazz club for many years. The immensely talented James Chapman and Daniel Dotor stoke the boiler on drums and bass respectively. In 2023 we welcome saxophonist Simon Bates to complete our regular line-up.

Ronnie Scott's regulars, The Drawtones, create a warm and engaging atmosphere. Featuring seasoned jazz artists, they also nurture and spotlight new and young talent in the band. Relaxed and groovy, bluesy and funky, the sax /guitar /organ combination gives them access to the hippest tunes from the '50s and '60s jazz era, to the dance floor iconic instrumentals of the '70s and '80s. They adapt to the 'room' and crowd, entertaining without imposing, building energetic improvisations whilst delivering the goods of the coolest and most recognisable tunes of the genre.
